Healthy Living: Do You Serve Your Flesh?

Genesis 25:30-34 tells a great story about Esau being lead by his flesh over a bowl of lentils. Esau begged Jacob to allow him to have a bowl of lentils to eat. Jacob told him that he could have the food if he sold his birthright (rights of the first born) to him. Esau was so hungry that he sold something that was very valuable. His flesh won!

I believe that we give up our birthright (righteousness, peace and joy) daily because we serve our flesh. We overeat and then we experience condemnation and deal with a low self- esteem. This is clearly living beneath our birthright. God wants better for us!

Proverbs 23:1-2 says, “For you will put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to desire.” Of course, we aren’t to literally put a knife to our throat, however if we have a problem serving the flesh, we need to take it very seriously. If you don’t get serious, you will never have victory in your flesh.

One of the main reasons I believe people struggle with weight is due to a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Due to marketing, we fall for absolute false claims that make us think we can look like a movie star if we try a certain diet. I remind clients daily that being healthy involves hard work and dedication. There is no magical formula.

FAD DIET ALERT! PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM DIETS THAT PROMISE THE FOLLOWING RESULTS !

  1. Fast and easy weight loss
  2. Miracle
  3. Banish fat
  4. Cure
  5. No exercise
  6. Quick fix

We need a lifestyle change and not another diet. The average diet lasts for 42 days. When you begin a new way of eating, it needs to a lifestyle change that you can apply for the rest of your life. Here are a few helpful hints:

  1. Eat a variety of foods- don’t restrict a food group from your diet. You may want to consider www.weightwatchers.com. This organization promotes balanced eating and exercise.
  2. Drink water and remove sodas from your diet.
  3. Eat 4-5 small meals a day and not 3 large meals.
  4. Stay in control - when you starve you allow yourself to get out of control. Keep healthy snacks in your car or at work. This will help you with portion control at meals.

Remember, if you supply the will then God will supply the power! Press on!
